Brazilian NGOs and communities receive training on human rights and complaints mechanisms

On September 22-27, in a small beach town near the port of Suape (Pernambuco, Brazil), representatives of various Brazilian NGOs and communities came together to exchange knowledge and information, decide on their strategy and build capacity in the use of grievance mechanisms to defend their human rights. The 5-day event was organised by Fair, Green and Global Alliance partners Both ENDS and SOMO, working together with the Brazilian Fórum Suape.

Displaced Cambodians file OECD complaint against ANZ Bank for financing massive land grab

Inclusive Development International and Equitable Cambodia have filed a formal complaint with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) against the Australian ANZ Bank. The complaint was lodged on behalf of 681 families who were forcibly displaced and dispossessed of their land and property to make way for a sugar plantation and refinery that received significant financing from ANZ. The complaint describes widespread breaches by ANZ of its responsibilities under the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises to ensure that it isn’t causing or contributing to human rights violations.

Samoan chiefs to the Asian Development Bank: Hands off our customary land

A group of village chiefs filed an official complaint to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) today, objecting to a series of ADB-backed reforms that could lead to the alienation of customary land. The chiefs are gravely concerned that the reforms, which have been carried out without meaningful consultation of Samoan people, could have the effect of individualizing control over land throughout the country, and ultimately placing large tracts of land in the hands of banks.

Liberian farmers, charcoal producers and workers have filed a complaint with the U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), one of the financiers of Buchanan Renewables’ operations in Liberia.
